The title itself given by Sir Alfred Nobel. He was Swedish Inventor and also an engineer. He has invented ballistite.

Alfred Nobel has wrote many wills during his lifetime. His will specified that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the "Greatest benefit for Mankind" in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine or Physiology, Literature and Peace.

For this, Nobel donated his 94% of his total assets, around 31 million SEK (almost US$186 million in 2008) to give these five prizes.

After this, the executors of Novel's will Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist formed the Nobel Foundation to take care of this fortune. It was founded in 29th June, 1900.
